DG Bobby Wallace Speaks at 2011 Induction Dinner
What rich and enjoyable times our club enjoyed yesterday evening and this morning! Last night we held our annual induction dinner at the Gorge Bar and Grill. Lisa and Marci did a wonderful job with arrangements and the program, which was warm, gracious and personal. Highlights were:
- Presence of David and Valerie Weaver, who were married on July 4, along with David’s daughter, Amber. How wonderful that they began married life at our function!
- Presence of District Governor Bobby Wallace, who led us in prayer and presided over the induction of new president Marci and the incoming board.
- Recognition of seven new Paul Harris Fellows.
- Recognition of numerous members with perfect attendance.
- Award of Rotarian of the Year to John Crouch.
- Presentation of Service Above Self Award to David Weaver.
- Presentation of Rotary Leadership Award to Anita Bringas.
Welcome Back; Guests:
At our meeting this morning we welcomed back Bill Thompson from Stillwater, OK and George Basch from his travels in Asia. Guests included Larry and Tulima Mauga, Lucille Gallegos Jaramillo and our speaker, District Governor Bobby, who gave a very personal and inspiring talk.
District Governor Bobby’s Remarks:
Bobby provided a wonderful overview of the District’s exciting plans and goals for the year, so this summary will be a bit detailed. He began on a personal note, relating how he was orphaned at age six and grew up at the New Mexico Boys Ranch. He is now the president and treasurer of the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranch Foundation. While growing up he had strong and supportive relationships with Rotarians, attending his first meeting at approximately age 9. He was always made to feel welcome and valued. He was an early RYLA camper, where he got a sense of Rotary leadership, and fell in love with Rotary.
Highlights for the new Rotary Year include:
- A fifth Avenue of Service, “New Generations.” The future of Rotary is with our youth. this avenue will include RYLA Camp, Youth Exchange, Rotoract, Interact and Ambassadorial Scholars. Each club is being asked to appoint a board member to head this up and give youth a voice. Past District Governor Dick Jones will be the District 5520 New Generations Chair.
- Bobby’s challenge to every Rotarian to recruit one new member this year. He reminded us that this begins with an ask. if we don’t ask someone to a meeting, we will not grow. The second issue with membership is retention. Our District 5520 Membership Committee plans to contact everyone who leaves Rotary to understand why and to help us do a better job with retention. Bobby also reminded us to contact members who don’t attend for a few weeks, so we understand why or can help them if they are in need.
- The Rio Grande Academy. See http://rotary5520.org/training/riograndeacademy/riograndeacademy.html. “The purpose of RLI is to provide an educational opportunity for Rotarians identified as potential leaders. . . The Rotary Leadership Institute offers courses in three full-day sessions, with each session approximately 6 – 8 weeks apart. Some examples of course sessions include “The Perfect Meeting,” “Rotary Beyond the Club,” “The Rotary Foundation,” “Membership Development and Retention,” “Leadership,” “Creating Hands on Service Projects,” Vocational Service,” “International Service,” “Public Relations,” “Public Speaking,” and others. . . Six RLI training teams have been established because our district is so widespread. There are training teams covering the Central, North, East, and South district geographic areas. . .”
- District 5520 Contests. Bobby asks every club to participate in or hold a blood drive, with awards to winning clubs to be presented at the District Convention. Also, a new wellness program was initiated last year. Each club will be challenged to keep a record of its total net weight loss over a period of 12 weeks, with the winners announced at the District Convention. Last year 20 clubs had a net weight loss of 685 pounds.
- The 2012 District 5520 Conference will be held between May 18, 2012 and may 2012 at the Albuquerque Hotel. The theme will be to honor the men and women who serve us in the Armed Forces, law enforcement and fire suppression. The District will host one honoree nominated by each club.
- Continued support for Every Rotarian Every Year contributions to the Rotary Foundation and sale by each Rotarian of ten cruise raffle tickets.
Bobby concluded by talking about this year’s Rotary theme, “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity.” He reminded us that a commitment to family comes first and is the platform from which we can support our clubs, our community and world service. We want to continue doing the things that are workking and change the things within ourselves and our clubs that aren’t. He asks each of us to recommit ourselves to Rotary.
Next meeting. Our meeting on July 13, 2011 will be our first club assembly of the new Rotary year.
