Our speakers were Deborah Simon and Greg Chalmers from Espanola who presented on “United by Friendship,” which focuses on humanitarian and economic development in Latin America. Deborah and Greg coordinated a Rotary project in Guatemala. With the help of several clubs in northern NM, they raised funds to deliver two ambulances to the county of San Pablo. It was a really adventure for the nine volunteers who crossed the border near Brownsville, into Mexico and on into Guatemala.
Their project for 2009 is a water project to get outdoor faucets to 57 homes and a school. Deborah spoke about the need for the support of more Rotary clubs since the budget for the Foundation is tight. She needs more club commitments by mid-summer. In 2010, GSE will feature the Philippines and in 2011 the exchange will be with Australia.
FEATURE GET TO KNOW YOUR FELLOW ROTARIAN – TULIMA MAUGA
1. Where did you spend your childhood and receive your education?
I’ve spent the majority of my childhood in Southern California from the town of Redlands in San Bernardino County, to Hemet in Riverside County. I attended various religious private schools throughout my elementary, junior high and first 2 years of high school. My only year spent outside of California during my adolescence was my senior year of high school when I graduated from Pagosa Springs High in Pagosa Springs, CO in 1995. I returned to Southern California and moved to Pomona and then Claremont in Los Angeles County and attended Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
2. Please briefly tell us about your family.
My immediate family is pretty small, comprising of my younger brother Larry, 22 yrs old (I’m
32) and my mom Adeline who spends half her time with us and the other half in Pagosa Springs with my stepfather.
3. When and why did you come to Taos?
I came to Taos by way of Angel Fire. I’m currently a member of the Angel Fire Rotary Club. I joined last year while I was in real estate sales and have lived there since October 2005. I was recruited by Kokopelli Taos Property Management as a Long Term Leasing Agent in September of 2008 and have lived my work and social facets of life here since.
4. What are the most satisfying or important aspects of being a Rotarian?
The most satisfying aspects of being a Rotarian are all of those that involve service. Service of others, of ourselves, is important for a sense of well-being and purpose. Purpose being “the point of finding the point (to life)”, we all go through our lives seeking for some reason to live and keep living in a way we find fulfilling. Helping those in need by use of personal resources such as money, time, knowledge and materials lends to the quality of life best suited to make our own lives enjoyable and useful on this planet not just for ourselves or our concepts of ourselves but truly for others to gain that for their lives as well. For me, it’s about a learning exchange–an energy exchange worth having.
5. What are your present goals?
My present goals or “what I wake up everyday to do”:
1. Save the world, one property at a time–regardless of how, whether through my work in property management, Rotary or serving peace of mind for a new friend outside of the business realm or what kind of property whether it’s a home or someone’s heart. Money or “new accounts” or “things” all take care of themselves when we get to basic necessities.
2. Constantly improve myself through learning by going through new experiences, interpersonal exchanges and studying other places, people and times through travel or reading.
3. Forgive and give. Forgive all and myself and to live life according to the “give” part of the concept.
